1. Quién es Adam Colton [sin juegos de palabras]?
Un monstruo. Un monstruo aterrador. Un hombre que le tiene miedo a las perillas de las puertas. El tipo de hombre que puede ser confundido con un "Homeless" (persona que vive en la calle) algunas veces. Que usa ropa interior que se pueden ser calificada como trapos. Alguien que está muy conectado con el aire libre, pero puede al mismo tiempo estar frente a la computadora por mucho tiempo y no volverse loco porque ama lo que hace. Una persona que está garantizado que siempre saldrá ultima en cualquier juego del estilo de "Trivia". Por la falta de cultura pop o por mi conocimiento de la última tendencia, podría perfectamente estar viviendo fuera de ambiente, haha. El tipo de persona que siempre admitirá que se tiró un pedo y seguirá tirandose más sin problemas. Una bolsa de pedos que le gusta excesivamente usar un “hahaha” al final de sus oraciones. Algunas personas piensan que siempre está metido en drogas, pero sin embargo, jamás lo está. Cuando algo anda mal, los aliens siempre son los culpables. Si te encuentras conmigo en un callejón oscuro, ten miedo, y prepárate para la batalla. Mis amigos me dicen idiota, cabeza de estúpido, y que no sirvo para nada.
2. Qué pasos estás siguiendo para mejorar tu escritura?
Ninguno. Siii, todo lo que escribo definitivamente pasa por Kyle [Chin] y/o Don [Tashman] (dueño de Loaded). Algunas veces deletreo mal mi nombre, no es broma. De alguna manera, pongo una "s" en Adam algunas veces. Una cosa en la que estoy trabajando es en "chequear mi ortografía" en mis emails antes de mandarlos. Por alguna razón, algunas veces mando mis emails y después los veo con terribles errores de ortografía. Cuando los encuentro, me río mucho sabiendo que la persona se va a sentir confundida. Si has recibido algún mail confuso de mi parte, diviértete.
3. Como un defensor del casco, cómo te ha salvado la vida el hecho de usarlo?
Una vez, realmente hice que esa chica se pusiera furiosa. Ella tomó el pan baguette y trató de pegarme. Afortunadamente, me pegó en el casco, woo weee. Era una baguette dura, quemada y congelada, así que era relmante dura. Siii, seguro que los cascos han salvado mi vida. No puedo recordar un momento exacto ahora mismo porque realmente soy bastante malo a la hora de recordar cosas, pero siempre me siento mucho mas confiado y sólido cuando estoy usando mi casco. Estaba andando sin casco, justo la semana pasada, pero porque un alien me lo robó. Se sentía muy raro, lo que en verdad es bueno. Creo que lo vengo usando hace tanto tiempo que me siento raro sin él. Encuentra un casco que se ajuste bien a tu cabeza y dale duro. Después vuela hacia el espacio exterior.
4. Por qué los longboarders te idolatran?
Porque me estoy quedando pelado.
5. Dónde aprendiste ese excéntrico sentido del humor? A veces deseas que la gente te tome más en serio?
Mi humor se ha ido desarrollando a lo largo de mi vida a través de mis amigos y las experiencias vividas. Tener un buen sentido del humor es clave para la vida; me lo dijo una vez una anciana, y nunca se puede confiar en las ancianas. Un buen ejemplo del sentido del humor es en mis viajes en longboard de larga distancia. Si no te puedes reir de lo mucho que apesta tu situación, haha, no vas a poder nunca hacer skating a lo largo de un país. Realmente me gusta conocer gente nueva e inventar historias falsas sobre mi vida, creando un nombre falso y teniendo una profesión rara. Para mi, esto es divertido y te mantiene con los pies en la tierra. Después, si creen que vale la pena conocerte, revelarán lentamente tus mentiras graciosas, que es algo que siempre lleva a unas buenas risotadas.
Naaah, ser tomado en serio puede ser sobrevalorado. Surgen más risas cuando no eres serio y también de reirte de personas que son demasiado serias, hahahaha. Asi que, si vas a ser de esos tipos que son serios, es mejor que seas demasiado serio, así por lo menos la gente puede reirse de ti. Obviamente, existen lugares y momentos para ser serios, y cuando me pongo serio, la gente lo sabe y me escucha. Normalmente sólo me pongo serio los miércoles.
6. Describe la primera vez que hiciste un video para Youtube.
No estoy seguro cual fue mi primer video para You Tube. Mirando en mi canal personal de You Tube whoisadam, que ya no actualizo más, el video más viejo ahí, es un TRICK TIP con Adam y Adam [Stokowski]: Walk the Plank. Cuatro años atrás, fue subido. Es sorprendente como, cuando subía mis primeros videos, a duras penas tenían alguna visita. Pero después de subir videos de buena calidad de skating (por lo menos eso espero), por más de cuatro años, ahora en el canal del Loaded Newsletter es sorprendente la comunidad que hemos construído y la cantidad de visitas que un video puede alcanzar.
7. De qué Universidad te graduaste? Cómo influyó el hecho de ir a la Universidad en tu personalidad?
Me gradué de la Universidad "Elon" en Elon, N.C. Estoy súper sorprendido conmigo mismo de haber podido terminar la Universidad, hahah. No me gusta nada el hecho de tener que escribir trabajos y hacer tareas domiciliarias sobre cosas que no me interesan. Pero me concentré y estoy realmente feliz de haberme graduado. La Universidad me dió el tiempo para hacer longboarding/skating y aprender a filmar y editar. Me dió el tiempo necesario para poder construir mi sitio web, whoisadamcolton.com, y subir algunos videos al sitio que captaron la atención de Loaded Boards, quienes me propusieron contactarolos después de volver de mi viaje a lo largo de los Estados Unidos. Querían hablarme de volver en tabla para ayudarlos a construir cochecitos de bebé. Cuatro años después, sigo aún con Loaded, y los cochecitos para bebés son todavía un ítem importante en nuestra lista de "cosas para hacer".
8. Qué piensas del chiste de Silverfish “Adam Colton sólo tiene la mitad de la barba porque Dios quería la otra mitad como souvenir?”
Nunca había escuchado ese chiste pero me parece muy simpático. Pienso que la mitad de mi barba es un excelente aislante, y la mitad de la cara de Dios debe estar muy calentita. Además, visto desde uno de sus perfiles, Dios va a parecer un hombre sabio de las montañas y del otro lado, un jóven y hermoso macho; eso sería si Dios es una persona.
9. Tu mencionaste en la página de internet de Paris Truck Co. que tienes una hermana y una muy buena relación con tus padres. Cómo ha influído ésta vida en familia en tu longboarding? Cual es tu consejo para los chicos a los cuales sus padres no apoyan tanto en éste tipo de proyectos?
Mi familia es genial. Siempre están al tanto de lo que estoy haciendo. Mis padres fueron una de las partes más importantes para que pudiea hacer mi "viaje a través de Estados Unidos". Fueron el sponsor principal de esa experiencia. Ellos pudieron ver lo dedicado que estaba para que el viaje se hiciera realidad. Cuando los fondos no eran suficientes, ellos intervinieron para hacerlo posible. Mi "viaje de skate a través de U.S.A." fué un punto de inflexión muy importante en mi vida. Realmente me dió mucha confianza el hecho de tener delante más de 4.800 kilómetros para patear e ir viendo que podíamos hacerlo realidad con todo el equipo. Un gran abrazo para mi mamá, mi papá y mi hermana. Los voy a estar viendo pronto en navidad.
Para los chicos que sus padres no los apoyan mucho con el skating/longboarding, realmente es una caída de huevos. Para algunos, puede ser simplemente la forma en que ellos les muestran el deporte a sus padres, y así, ellos no quedan emocionados con lo que están haciendo. Si estás intentando que el longboarding tenga una parte importante en tu vida y meterte en la industria, trataría de involucrar a tus padres. Hazlos saber que hay bastante más en el longboarding que el simple hecho de salir fuera y lastimarse. Es una industria que está en crecimiento, con muchas personas que se están ganando la vida de ésto. Es una excelente salida para la creatividad. Personas de todo el mundo se están metiendo en esto. Hay tantas cosas que pueden surgir del deporte, como filmar y editar, diseñar, la fotografía, ventas, marketing, etc, etc. Demuéstrales que estás muy metido en esto y que tienes claras las metas que te estás proponiendo; cuales quiera que éstas sean. RECUERDA, debes mostrarles ciertas pruebas a tus padres de que estás trabajando para alcanzar tus metas. Sólo hablar de ellas, no va a hacer que las pruebas duren mucho.
10. Cuéntame del momento en que te diste cuenta de que el longboarding había capturado tu corazón y nunca volvería a ser como antes.
Realmente es bastante loca la relación que tengo con el longboarding; relmante es de poca dependencia. Por ejemplo, puedo ir a casa de mi familia en VA [Virginia] por un mes y ni siquiera llevar mi longboard, no hacer longboard ni una vez y no extrañarlo, ni ponerme loco por no andar. Puedo irme para afuera de mochilero y andar por el camino de los Apalaches por seis meses, por ejemplo, y puedo decir honestamente que no me aburriría demasiado. Sea lo que sea que estoy haciendo, realmente estoy metido en eso, estoy en ese momento haciendo únicamente eso. Y así como el longboarding es una parte importantísima de mi vida, lleno mi vida con otro montón de cosas hermosas; puede ser saliendo de mochilero, fotografiando, jugando al tenis o escalando montañas. Mi corazón nunca será capturado por una sóla cosa en particular, únicamente por esa princesa - monstruo.
1. Who is Adam Colton [no pun intended]?
A monster. A flat-out scary monster. A man who is scared of doorknobs. The kind of guy than can be mistaken as homeless at times. Underwear that are classified as rags. Someone who is very connected to the outdoors but can still manage to be on the computer a lot and not go crazy because he loves his job. A person that is always guaranteed last place at any sort of trivia game. For the lack of pop culture or the latest trend knowledge I know, I might as well be living in the backcountry, haha. The kind of guy who will always admit to a fart and willingly let them loose. A fartbagger that likes to overly uses “hahaha” after sentences. Someone people think that is always on drugs but is never. When something goes wrong aliens are to blame. If you meet me in a dark alley, be afraid, and be prepared to battle. I like to move yet be still when it is earned. My friends call me idiot, stupid head, worthless.
2. What steps are you taking to improve your spelling?
None, attacker. Yeah, everything I write definitely goes through Kyle [Chin] and, or Don [Tashman]. I sometimes spell my name wrong, no joke. Somehow, I put an ‘s’ into Adam sometimes. One thing that I am working on is “spelling checking” my emails before I send them. For some reason, I sometimes send my emails and then look at them afterwards for gnarly spelling errors. When I find them, I laugh knowing the person will be confused. If you have got a confusing email from me, be stoked.
3. As an advocate of the helmet, how has a one saved your life?
One time, I made this girl really mad. She took this baguette and tried to hit me. Luckily, it hit my helmet, woo weee. It was a stale, freezer burned baguette, so it was pretty darn hard. Yeah, helmets for sure have saved my life. I can’t really recall an exact moment right now because I am never really good at recalling stuff, but I always feel much more confident and solid when I am wearing my helmet. I was actually skating without a helmet, just last week, because an alien stole it. It felt totally weird, which is sweet. I guess I have worn one enough that I feel weird without one. Find a helmet that fits your head well, and rock it hard. Then fly to outer space.
4. Why do longboarders idolize you?
Because I am going bald.
5. Where did you get your offbeat sense of humor? Do you ever wish people would take you more seriously?
My humor has been developed over my life through friends and experiences. Having a good sense of humor is key to life; I got told that once by an old lady, and old ladies can never be trusted. A good example of humor is on my long distance skating trips. If you can’t laugh about how much your situation sucks, then haha you are not going to make it skating across a country. I really like meeting new people and making up fake stories about my life, creating a fake name and having a weird profession. Tis fun and keeps you on your toes. Then, if they are worth getting to know you, slowly reveal your funny lies, which always leads to a good laugh.
Nah, being taken seriously can be overrated. More laughs come from not being serious or laughing at people who are too serious, hahaha. So yeah, if you are going to be any kind of serious it is best to be too serious, so at least people can laugh at you. Obviously, there is a time and place for being serious, and when I get serious people know and listen. I usually only get serious on Wednesdays.
6. Describe the first time you made a YouTube video.
Not even sure what my first YouTube video was. Looking back on my old personal channel whoisadam, that I really do not update anymore, the oldest video on there is TRICK TIPS with Adam and Adam[Stokowski]: Walk the Plank. Four years ago, it was posted. It is amazing how when I first used to post videos they got hardly any views. But after posting good quality skate videos (at least I hope so), for over four years, now on the Loaded Newsletter channel it is amazing the community we have built up and the views a super rad video can achieve.
7. What college did you graduate from? How did going to college shape you as a person?
I graduated from Elon University in Elon, N.C. I am super impressed with myself that I made it through college, hahah. I totally do not like writing papers and doing homework on things I do not care about. I did focus, and I am stoked I graduated. College gave me the time to longboard/skateboard and learn how to shoot and edit. It gave me just the right amount of time to build my website,whoisadamcolton.com, post up some videos on the site that captured the attention of Loaded Boards, who asked me to contact them after I got back from skating across the U.S. They wanted to talk to me about coming on-board to help build baby strollers. Four years later, I am still with Loaded, and baby strollers are still a high priority on our “to do”list.
8. What do you think of the Silverfish joke “Adam Colton only has half a beard because god wanted half as a souvenir?”
I have never heard that joke before but sweet. I think my half beard is great insulation, and half of gods face will be really warm. Plus, from one side god will look like a wise mountain man, and on the other a young handsome buck; that is if God is a man.
9. You mention on the Paris Truck Co. website that you have one sister and a good relationship with your parents. How has your family life influenced your longboarding? What is your advice to children whose parents are not supportive of spreading the stoke?
My family is super duper rad. They keep up to date on all that is going on. My parents were the biggest part of getting the “Skate Across the U.S.A.” trip happening. They were the primary sponsor of this ordeal. They saw how dedicated I was to making this trip work. When funds were majorly short they stepped in, so I could see the vision through. That skate across the U.S.A. trip was a big turning point in my life. It really gave me a lot of confidence having 3,000 miles to push in front of me and seeing that through with the team. Big hug to my mom, dad, and sister. I shall be seeing them all shortly for Christmas.
For kids whose parents are not supportive, that is a bummer to the bum. For some it could just be the way they are going about presenting it to their parents that are making their parents not stoked. If you are trying to make longboarding a living/get involved in the industry, I would try to get your parents involved. Let them know there is more to longboarding than just going outside and trying to hurt yourself. It is a growing industry with plenty of people making a living. It is a creative outlet. People all over the world are getting involved. There are many different aspects that can spawn from it such as filming and editing, designing, photography, sales, marketing, etc. Show them you are on top of the case and are working towards making your goal happen whatever it is. REMEMBER, you got to show your parents some kind of proof you are working towards your goal. Stringing them along on a wild verbal idea can only last so long.
10. Tell me about the moment you realized longboarding captured your heart and wouldn’t give it back.
It is crazy the relationship I have with longboarding; it is very non-attached. Example, I can go home to VA [Virginia] for a month, not even bring my longboard, not longboard once, and not really miss it or go crazy. I could go away and backpack the entire Appalachian Trail for six months, lets say, and I honestly can say I would not be too bothered. Whatever I am doing or involved in, I am in the moment doing it. And as much as longboarding is a huge part of my life, I definitely fill my life with other wonderful joys, may it be backpacking, photography, tennis, rock climbing and my favorite, pencil sharpening. My heart will never be captured by any one particular thing, only by that certain Monster Princess.
